Charles Ray “Gypsy” Mitchell was born in Dallas, TX in 1952. At 17 he formed the innovative gospel-funk group The Relatives, co-writing, arranging, and playing guitar on their early singles. Gypsy’s guitar sound blends open tuning, effects pedals, and influences from Wes Montgomery, Jimi Hendrix, and Cal Valentine. He toured as a guitarist for Buddy Ace in the mid-80s and has shared stages with Joe Simon, Johnnie Taylor, and Little Milton. In 2021 he began sharing a lifetime of original compositions with collaborators including Zach Ernst and Matthew Strmiska (members of Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears).
